I am so glad I got the opportunity to come back after they were finished with TCAPs. I feel this really gave me more of an insight into how they really operate in the fourth grade classrooms. I had a fantastic experience helping one of the students in my class this week.

\nThere is a little boy in Mrs. Eby's class who has some trouble following directions. He has big behavior problems, never does his work, never listens in class and has even threatened the school as well as Mrs.Eby. During their math lesson this week I went and sat next to him and sort of made it a game for him. Mrs. Eby and the class were doing the problems on the smart board and I challenged him that I bet he couldn't finish them before Mrs. Eby and the others in the class. He immediately responded and got to work. And finished the whole sheet with no problem and got every answer right! He even volunteered to work one out one the board. He was working out the problems and writing out every step and throughout the rest of the week had no behavior problems and was gettings A's and A+ on all his work. He was volunteering to share his work with the class during writing and Language Arts and interacting better with the class. I know not all of it had to do with my helping him, but I did feel good knowing I helped him have a minor breakthrough.

\nOn my last day I made cupcakes for the class and had a sort of relaxed lesson with them. We read a book and they wrote their own short stories to go with the pictures. They loved it! And I was so impressed with the work they did. At the end of the day I almost started tearing up with all the kids coming up and hugging me and asking of I could come back and visit before they got out of school for the summer. I never would have thought that in two weeks could have had that much of an impact on myself and the students. As I was leaving, Mrs.Eby told me that I was going to be a fantastic teacher and she had know doubt I would do great. That was such an encouragement to me from such a great teacher. I greatly enjoyed my time at Linden and cannot wait to be in the classroom again.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"53096364","dateCreated":"1334874733","smartDate":"Apr 19, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"brarnold42","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/brarnold42","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/brarnold42.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/53096364"},"dateDigested":1532145419,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Linden Elementary Week #1 (for me)","description":"This week was my first full week at Linden. I am really enjoying my class and love all the students! I am learning a great deal from them as well as Mrs. Eby. At first it was a little hard for me to know what to do and how to fit in without being in the way. A lot of what they are doing is TCAP review and a HUGE amount of packets and worksheets. I know Mrs. Eby is working really hard to work with the students before they take their exam so I didn\u2019t want to be in the way. I have simply been walking around the room and helping any students who need assistance and helping students stay on task that seem to be having problems.

\nI got to teach a history lesson yesterday and had a lot of fun working with the kids. Today in class the students told me they loved the lesson and where still talking about the things they learned, so that made me feel really good about things. Of course, I know I am just new and different so I am sure that helped their interest level in the topic, but it still made me feel good.
\n
\nToday the students played a math game I made on PowerPoint, and brought in to help them review for TCAPs. The students loved the game and I think it was a great stress reliever and a break from all the monotonous packets they have been doing. Hopefully, this little \u201cpreview\u201d will help them with the activities tomorrow and on the TCAPs themselves. Every day that I am in the classroom I get more and more excited about teaching and having my own class one day! Especially when I have the opportunity to teach and work with them!

\nThe meeting this morning with Mr. Ward was awesome! I was so glad to be able to talk with him and to get some pointers from him. I think it is great he is so willing to help us and talk with us about our concerns and questions, as we are about to become classroom teachers. I really hope I am lucky enough to work from a principal like that when I begin teaching.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"53097470","body":"Brittany,

\nI feel more and more excited about having my own classroom too! I hope they are ready for all the math quiz shows they will be doing tomorrow! I also agree that the meeting with Mr. Ward was great! I love how involved he is and that he really wants to help us! I hope you are ready to be a cheerleader! WOO!!!

When I first went into the school we met with the Principal in the Library. He gave us a run down of what to do and what to expect in the school, as well as giving us the Staff Handbook of the school. He told us to take a look at the handbook over the weekend and that throughout our stay he would be setting up "mock interviews" with us to help get us more comfortable with what questions and what we should put in our resumes when we go to apply for a job after graduation. He was very helpful in making us feel comfortable in the school and opened up the discussion to answer any questions we might have had. One of the students came to get us in from the library and take us to the classroom. When I got to the classroom, all of the students were doing packets to review what they call "mountain math" for the week. The students watched a video and made a foldable for their social studies lesson. During the video I filed the teacher's Friday folders for her class and during the activities I walked around and assisted with any questions the students had about the activities. After their social studies lesson it was lunch time, I followed the class to the lunch room and had lunch with the fellow teachers in the teacher's lounge. After lunch my teacher had to leave and a substitute came into the classroom. I took the class out to recess and then came back into the classroom where the substitute had another video ready for the students to learn more about the branches of government and how they work. The students were then given time to complete their foldable activity and have AR time. After AR we took the students to Science Lab, were the students learned about the different forms of rocks and how they are formed. After science lab students had art class. There was another substitute in art class, therefore the students watched a video about colors and the color wheel. The students then discussed the color wheel and created their own color wheel. After art class the students went back to the classroom and had more AR time and time to take reading tests if they were ready for them. As the end of the day neared the students prepared to go home and end the day. I really enjoyed my school and the little time I got to spend with my teacher. I am very excited to spend more time here and to learn from her, the staff, and the students at the school.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"53049832","body":"Brittany,
\nIt sounds like you had a great first day with a few bumps. =) It would be really challenging to have your mentor teacher leave on the first day! It sounds like you handled it well. I also spent time filling friday folders, and we do mountain math in our class too. I know, since we eat lunch together every day, that you are having a great experience. I am so glad we are working together and having similar experiences!

\nGlad to have you back into the mix, it sounds like we have had a rash of sicknesses that have had an effect on the TTU students at Linden (strep seems to be popular). You certainly did run around on your first day, and I hope things calm down for you. I have no idea what AR time is, but it sure reads like the children got in a lot of video time when the substitute was with the class. Hopefully you will get to interact with the children a bunch during our final week at Linden. I think the pep rally for the TCAPS is going to be a blast on Friday (if I get to go).","dateCreated":"1334803369","smartDate":"Apr 18, 2012","userCreated":{"username":"pmsmith7","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/pmsmith7","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
